How Arabian Scholars Can Market Ideas Through Good Writing

In considering how young Arab scholars can market their ideas for change through good writing skills is a task that will be achieved  only by determining certain aspects involved in the desired outcome.

Conventional wisdom (as per prominent dictionaries) holds that a scholar may be viewed in one of three ways. A scholar can be an individual who attends a school under the direction of a teacher, may be a scholarship reciepient, or a learned person. Encompassing all three definitions has merit and may be a preferable starting point.

When we consider the word, “market” in our society the most common notion is that of a means of moving goods and generating money. Promoting of ideas works here as well and in this context the reader may accept the two as synonomous.

Now  the issue arises just what is good writing? Is it a piece that is mechanically/grammatically correct? Is it a piece that is stylistically attractive? Is it a piece that is agreeable to one audience or the other? The answer to this is “all of the above”-as well as other conventions.

We then must arrive at the marketing language. According to Wikipedia, if we talk of the Arabic language we may be talking of a variety of languages including some  Semitic derivations stretching from North Africa to the Middle East including a population range from 200 million to 480 million people. Assuming it is the language of the Quaran (Koran) the agreed upon language would be Literary Arabic.

Young scholars-those at the equivalent level of our elementary level have the first “marketing” opportunity. Via the internet, they can acquaint their foreign counterparts on all continents by following the traditional “pen pal model” used for generations.
The survival of this model for generations is the result  of the fact that it simply works, What is marketed in this medium. Things like what Arab families are like. Things like what their schools are like and what they learn in school. Things like what Arab kids to outside of school. And things that show that “kids are kids” in the Arab world as well as in Middle America. These first ambassadors may be the most effective marketers of all and their format is the simple letter form.

Older scholars, those who have climbed to the level of higher education  and beyond have the maturity and knowledge base to do more in depth, sophisticated marketing. This is the market of the exchange of ideas, a more intangible trading area. Again, whether this be the simple letter format or more formal essay platforms which develops a clear thesis supported by documentary details the key to fowarding or marketing these ideas is proficiency in the written word.

Proficiency means understanding and correct use of a format, mechanics/ grammar that follow established language norms, and even correct spelling. This proficiency is the key to persuasion, narrative, laying down of priorities, and winning over the reading audience however adverserial that audience may be.

Effective, quality writing, no matter the stage, will attract the reader. It should hold the reader even if that reader holds a position varying with the writer. It not only is a matter of setting pen to paper or finger to keyboard. Quality writing leads further to higher level reading and even more articulate, better enunciated verbal skills. All will help the young Arab scholar in their markting endeavors. Inevitably,  the “market” is a two way exchange.

This may not translate into today’s IM’s, chat rooms, or questionable websites. As a half century ago with TV the internet has the potential of becoming this century’s wasteland. “Good Writing” that complies with established norms and format
is a powerful marketing tool. It may be the salvation of the cyber world and may be a key to understanding two diverse cultures.

Finally, just as learning occurs in many venues, scholars are found in many settings. It could be the produce vendor on the streets of Baghdad, it could be a taxi driver on the streets of Tehran, or it could be the exchange student. All of these with  the proper effort and learning experience can show that truly “the pen is mightier than the sword”.
